“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

Our Golden Text this week comes from 3 John 1:2. Although there is some discussion over the authorship of the Gospel of John and the three epistles of John, for the most part it is accepted the author was the Apostle John. This is the disciple who lay on the breast of our Master, Christ Jesus. And it is that disciple and apostle who begins his letter found in the New Testament, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

What a wish that is! A wish we all would love to accept and receive! A wish that we prosper and have good health. And that wish is what our Bible Lesson this week is all about.

The Responsive Reading is from Luke 15. The 15th chapter of Luke could be called, the “parable chapter” or “Jesus makes the Pharisees mad by eating with publicans and sinners.”

So much of our Master’s teaching came in response to criticism, attacks, or comments from others. In this case Chapter 15 begins with the Pharisees giving the Master a hard time because he was having dinner with those the Pharisees deemed unworthy and perhaps just bad folks as well as with Publicans (Roman tax or revenue collectors) and “sinners.” We do not know exactly who the people were who were described as “sinners” other than presumably less reputable people or even immoral people. But, whoever they were Jesus shared a meal with them. And when the Pharisees objected in critical judgment, Jesus shared three parables with them.

Within Luke 15 you first find the concern about Jesus sharing a meal with supposedly bad people. And then three of his classic parables. The story of the shepherd who lost one of his 100 sheep and went out to find that one. The story of the woman who lost a coin and cleaned her entire home to find that coin. And finally, the parable in our Responsive Reading, The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-14,17-20, and 24). The story of a young man asking for what money he had coming from his father and who went out and wasted it all in a wild spree of immoral living. When this young man finally woke up from his dream of sensuality he headed home in misery and shame. Only to be greeted by his Father with open arms and unending Love.

What an example that is for us all as we ourselves perhaps return home after failing to live an exemplary, successful life or as a family member returns home in what appears to be less than successful circumstances. This parable can be an example for us all, since most of us have failed miserably at one time or another. With the love that pours forth in this parable we can go from a painful, horrible experience to the great wish for prosperity and health found in our Golden Text being realized in our lives.

And that is exactly how we are going to elucidate the message of this week’s lesson. We are going to share an array of experiences from around the world in practical application of this truths found in this week’s lesson. We are going to let shining examples from Africa, Germany, and California illustrate that power prospering in the light of Soul. And then, as we individually study this Bible Lesson we each will have our own daily unfoldments and proofs of God prospering each of us.

Section 1: We are Soul’s reflection!

Beautiful Bible verses in this section remind us that we shine forth as God’s witnesses. And the Science and Health citations lift us to an awareness that “Man, in the likeness of his Maker, reflects the central light of being, the invisible God.” The following short article clearly brings the sense of this section of the lesson.

Spiritual Short

Shine!

By Lona Ingwerson, CS

From the November 2019 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As a young mother, I often turned to a local Christian Science practitioner for help. We called her “Grandma Helen” because she was like family. I was once bemoaning the fact to her that I must demonstrate, solve and heal, whatever it was I was embroiled in at the moment “in order to prove Christian Science” for everyone.

She said with her no-nonsense affection, “Look, cookie, it’s been proven by others long ago, so don’t worry about it.” She was telling me, and I knew it, that I was not personally responsible for the success of the entire Christian Science movement, that it would stand on its own merit.

I repeat this little story simply because I think students of Christian Science care deeply about Christian Science, and we so want it to be seen and understood and appreciated and accepted and … grow! That’s good, and we shouldn’t be complacent, but more than that, God truly doesn’t need us to do lots of explaining to the world how it works. Our lives should, instead, show how it works.

A Christian Scientist just emailed me with an example of this. She is someone who radiates joy. She said she had just been to the grocery store and the cashier had asked her if she would please pray for her, as she felt undervalued. That, to me, epitomizes Christian Science. It’s letting your light shine brightly enough so that others see it and are drawn to it. Christ Jesus told us not to hide our light (see Matthew 5:14–16). You don’t have to explain how many watts this light is or whether it’s 30 or 100 watts; you just have to shine with the reflected light of God.

You don’t have to wait to be at church to shine, either. You just shine. “To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power; and this is Christian Science” (Mary Baker Eddy, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 160).

Section 2: Who are we really? Just some body?

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth, “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens… We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” (II Cor. 5, B8). The Science and Health citations include this statement from Mary Baker Eddy, “When you say, ‘Man’s body is material,’ I say with Paul: Be “willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” Give up your material belief of mind in matter, and have but one Mind, even God; for this Mind forms its own likeness.” (SH 216:28, S6)

A good example of this choice of who we really are, physical body or spiritual idea, comes from Christian, a young friend in South Africa. Christian is 14 years old, a student, and also a sincere student of Christian Science. He recently became a member the Christian Science Church where he attends Sunday School. He sent me an experience he had last year, with cough, flu, and a runny nose. “I was reading Science and Health and asked myself what am I really doing here? Christian Science is not only to study the Truth, but also to demonstrate it. So, I challenged the symptoms of sickness as a lie about me. I prayed to remove myself from that belief. I realized my identity was not as a sick person, but as God’s idea, God’s child. Suddenly, the cough was gone and the runny nose also. Then, the winter started in July (South Africa). Many people said to me that I would get sick. People around me seemed to be sick often, but I was free from all the beliefs of cold or flu. I am so grateful.”

And another report from Germany makes it clear that even if the normal material remedies offer “quick” relief, many are finding that the promises fall short. So, we learn from each experience we have.

This is from Anja Kaup in Laudenbach, Germany.
“I can share a short, little healing of nail fungus.”

“Removing nail polish after two weeks of summer holidays at the beach I was kind of shocked to find that the two large toes had nail fungus. I wanted to get rid of it as quickly as possible and with very little effort and bought some lotion at the pharmacy. It turned out to be more time consuming than I had thought to treat the condition appropriately. But some weeks later I found out, that the condition had returned and that it looked worse than the first time. This time I knew what to do. I wanted to heal this situation thoroughly. “Fear not” was the best remedy in this case, as I found out! It was much easier to apply, did not take as much time as the other procedure and really removed the error thoroughly. Whenever I thought about the toes I said to myself “Fear not!” I did not have to treat a material condition, but the fear about all the stories I had read in the package leaflet. There was nothing to fear because this condition was not really real. “Fear not” is talking about the power and reality of God, of good. I asked myself "why don't I have to fear anything"? The answer was that there is nothing to fear, when God is all and is expressing all and therefore all is perfectly harmonious and good. There was no need to fear anything!

“Next time I happened to look at my toes again they were rosy again and stayed like this. I was so happy that this promise "Fear not", the central message of the Bible, had carried me, lifted me above the error and cared for all.”

Section 3: Christ, best remedy for pain and healing.

In this section we find the Prophet Jeremiah writing, “Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed?” (Jeremiah 15:18, B9) Doesn’t that sound just a little like today’s world belief? Pain beyond description and with little answer. But, the Prophet (like us) rose up higher in his thought and then affirmed, “Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:” (Jeremiah 32:17, B10) I guess you could say his expectations rose! The Science and Health citations in this section are a wonderful bugle call to physical freedom and dominion, and show how the Christ voicing good to all mankind is the one true answer to removing pain and healing.

A dear friend and Christian Science practitioner, Annette Kreuziger-Herr, wrote an article in February 24, 1997 Christian Science Sentinel. She related in the article as follows

“Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.”
Annette Kreuziger-Herr, CS, Berlin, Germany

“A few years ago, during the night I was wakened by our toddler, who needed my help. I got up, hugged him, spoke a few words, changed his clothes, and he went peacefully back to sleep. Upon leaving his room, however, I was overwhelmed with a sudden attack of excruciating pain such as I had never experienced before. As we had guests in our house, practically every room was occupied. I was able to reach the bathroom and sat down on the floor. I felt miserable and lonely, and I needed immediate help. I can still feel today the hope that lighted up in my thinking when I remembered that I had help right at hand: God is my Physician, as the Bible assures us, saying, for example, "I am the Lord that healeth thee" (Ex. 15:26).

“I then started to think about ‘the scientific statement of being,’ which begins: ‘There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All–in–all’ (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 468).

“I realized in a moment of clear insight that this "All," the allness and oneness of God, counteracts forever any possibility of life, truth, intelligence, or substance in matter. And as this "All" was the "Only," I knew without any doubt that this pain was not my experience and I could feel that Life is Spirit. I was instantly healed. The healing was so complete that I went back to bed, slept soundly, and remembered nothing of the incident the next morning until I found our son's clothes, which I had changed the previous night.”

Here is a late breaking report from Slim Okezie, a friend in Nigeria:

“Of a truth, nothing being presented by the physical senses should be accepted at face value.

“I experienced an excruciating back and neck pain last week. It was absolutely painful that I find it pretty hard to turn my neck either way. At first, I gave no attention to it but after two days, the pain got intensified. On Saturday morning, being the 16th of November, I woke by 2pm to do my readings as usual, but could not stand up because of the pain. I laid in bed realizing the truth about man's spiritual, indissoluble rapport with our Father-Mother God, that body is entirely mental, as the universe, not material and that man has got no body separate from God. This truth removed the mental haze that beclouded my thought. After thirty minutes I was able to stand and do my readings. Before eight the same morning, the pain had abated completely. Am absolutely grateful for Christian Science.

No limits of geography or time with this Science of Soul and its healing power!

Section 4: God, Soul heals.

It seems the Prophet Jeremiah maintained his spiritual attitude and altitude a little better when you read these citations from Section 4.

B13 | Jeremiah 8:22 22 “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?”

B14 | Jeremiah 30:11 “I am with thee, saith the Lord, to save thee: There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast no healing medicines. I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord;”

Yes it does seem he rose up. And he knew that God healed!

The Prophet asked “Is there no balm in Gilead?”

Jesus answered the Prophet’s question! He proved the healing touch of Love, the balm that alleviates and heals was certainly active when in Mark 5 we are told of a woman who for 12 years sought help from physicians to heal a hemorrhage. She spent all she had and then as a last-ditch effort, she went out in public to find Jesus. Due to the nature of her illness this was strictly forbidden. But she was desperate. And she went out, found Jesus, and in the middle of the crowd that surrounded him, she touched the hem of his clothes. And, she was healed! When she told Jesus what had happened, the Master said, “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.”

In 1875 Mary Baker Eddy published her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and suddenly the healing power of the Christ was not just a historic record, but a daily occurrence. She writes in Citation S18 “Do you say the time has not yet come in which to recognize Soul as substantial and able to control the body? Remember Jesus, who nearly nineteen centuries ago demonstrated the power of Spirit and said, ‘He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also,’ and who also said, ‘But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth.’ ” (SH 92:32–7)

Well, here is an example of that healing balm! A friend in Cape Town, South Africa wrote this morning to share this: “Last night at about 2 am I woke to find the circulation in one hand appeared to be cut-off and was causing extreme pain. I sat up and started immediately to declare the truth as Jesus instructs. “Ye shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free.” I thought that the only thing circulating was God’s law of Love. That there was no life in matter because Life, God was Spirit and God is All-in-all. Nothing more really. So, I lay down again, turned over, and fell asleep instantly. When I woke up this morning my hand was normal, there was no more pain. I was so grateful. Rose Deary, Cape Town, South Africa.

And from Helen Dix, also from Cape Town comes this sharing of a simple, powerful healing:

“Here’s a healing of dizziness last week where the whole world seemed to be spinning if I stood or lay down. Stopped these thoughts focused on body and firmly knew God's qualities were balance and equipoise and I had choice to accept sense testimony or know I could never be separated from God as His full reflection. I already included balance steadiness poise stability.
I obviously stuck with what God knew and dizziness totally disappeared within a couple of minutes of sticking to Truth. So grateful. Loved the angel message of line from hymn “ 'tis sense that would deceive.”

Everywhere, every day, everybody, and anybody can experience, prove, and rejoice in this healing presence.

Section – 5: True satisfaction.

The Prodigal Son parable shows us the importance of rising up from our false belief about what brings real pleasure, real satisfaction. He ended up eating the left-over pig slop to keep from starving. He came to himself and realized returning to his Father would bring him right back into the fold, even if only as a servant. He was ready to just be a servant to be able to eat, but his Father’s love was so great that his home, his place, was restored to him.

There is a choice to be made. What shall we pursue? What shall be our desire? What shall guide our wants? Citation 19 in the Bible encourages us….

B19 | Titus 2:11, 12 “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;”

And Science and Health instructs, “Reform comes by understanding that there is no abiding pleasure in evil, and also by gaining an affection for good according to Science, which reveals the immortal fact that neither pleasure nor pain, appetite nor passion, can exist in or of matter, while divine Mind can and does destroy the false beliefs of pleasure, pain, or fear and all the sinful appetites of the human mind”. (S28 | 327:1, 29)

“Reason is the most active human faculty. Let that inform the sentiments and awaken the man’s dormant sense of moral obligation, and by degrees he will learn the nothingness of the pleasures of human sense and the grandeur and bliss of a spiritual sense, which silences the material or corporeal. Then he not only will be saved, but is saved.”

As a 19-year-old I had a wonderful, adventurous visit in Colombia. I was with college friends who were returning to Colombia, their home, for a summer’s visit. We climbed volcanoes, drove across the entire country in a jeep, and we partied and danced a lot. It was a great summer. At one point we were at a party including many lawyers and judges. Since it is sometimes said that the national past time in Colombia is drinking there was also lots of alcohol. There was lots of music, lots of dancing, and lots and lots of alcohol. I was continually offered something to drink, alcohol, that is—and I simply said “no thank you.” One of the hosts who had been very insistent that I had to have something to drink finally came up to me and said I have been watching you. You have been having a very good time. Dancing and having fun. But you have not been drinking! So, I have decided that you do not drink because you are drunk on life! Well, it was true that I had been having a wonderful time without any drinking. And his characterization may not have been the way I would have put it, but he gave me a big hug and smile, and simply said, “You keep having fun your way.”

And so, it has been in my life. I have traveled the world. Met wonderful people. Enjoyed many new cultures and all without any alcohol or drugs. I have had very, very fun adventures and guess what I remember them all— thanks to being sober and alert. And over the years I have had the opportunity to help many people that had over-indulged and needed someone to get them home. What a blessing having a true sense of satisfaction has been.

Section 6: The Joys of Soul.

Citations overflow with joy from both our Pastors!

The Bible:
“my soul shall be joyful in the Lord: it shall rejoice in his salvation.” (B21, Ps. 35:9)

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:
“The sinless joy, — the perfect harmony and immortality of Life, possessing unlimited divine beauty and goodness without a single bodily pleasure or pain, — constitutes the only veritable, indestructible man, whose being is spiritual.”

One of the most joyful people I have ever met in my life is a rather new friend of the last few years. Adelheid and I met because of the CedarS Newsletter Met. (Met because of the Met!) Adelheid is a longtime member of the Nuremberg Germany Christian Science church. She is not a lifelong Christian Scientist. Although she and her family found Christian Science some years ago. One experience she shared with me was when as a girl she was actually periodically in great pain. She remembers one day as this overwhelming pain had hit again and there she was in bed. She looked up as her mother stood by her bed and firmly declared something rather new for both of them, “There is no pain in truth and no truth in pain.” Her mother also emphatically repeated the Scientific Statement of Being from page 468 of the Christian Science textbook. Many times. And as if in direct answer to the question, “Is there no balm in Gilead?” Adelheid’s pain simply vanished, never to return again. And in addition, that was the beginning of a life lived in demonstration of Christian Science. She told me this morning that that has meant 50 years of a healthy, active life with no medicine of any kind other than the medicine of divine Mind, the healing power of the Christ in her life.

What a wonderful promise for all humanity. Understanding God as Soul and man, shining in perfection as the reflection of Soul, means one never need to suffer in pain.

The Bible’s promise rings out, and there shall be no more pain!
