Possible Sunday School Topics (P.S.S.T.s)
for The Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson:

for January 15-21, 2024

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S., for CedarS Camps   •   314-308-1059

One of the great blessings to mankind is Christian Science, one of whose postulates is “…that the spiritual real man has no birth, no material life, and no death” – Science & Health 288:25.

P.S.S.T.  Golden Text (GT)/Psalm 133:3, “…the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.”

Do you understand how blessed you are? What three (or more) things come to mind that identify as blessings in your life? Where does God, Love, fit into any of these blessings?

Responsive Reading (RR)/Deuteronomy 28:2,5,6,8,9,12; Psalm 36:7,9

What are some blessings identified in the RR text? Why are you deserving of blessings? Is it because you are a good person who goes to Sunday School and Wednesday testimony meetings, or you are a good student, or you’re a helper to your siblings or parents?

That is, do you have to earn blessings, or are they a natural part of your life? This may require a different view of who God is, and who you are as God’s image. If you jump into a lake or river, do you have to beg or pray for the water to cover you? No, it naturally does so. This is how it is with God and you.

Read together the blessing Aaron pronounced on the children of Israel in Numbers 6:24-26: “The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”

This is how it is with you today!

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – This does not mean we have nothing to do in the blessing business; it does mean we are to be receptive, to open our eyes and ears to see and hear what God, Love, is providing for us.

Read together Hymn 93 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words provided here):

Hymn 93

Happy the man whose heart can rest, / Assured God’s goodness ne’er will cease; / Each day, complete, with joy is blessed, / God keepeth him in perfect peace.

God keepeth him, and God is one, / One Life, forevermore the same, / One Truth unchanged while ages run; / Eternal Love His holiest name.

Dwelling in Love that cannot change, / From anxious fear man finds release; / No more his homeless longings range, / God keepeth him in perfect peace.

In perfect peace, with tumult stilled, / Enhavened where no storms arise, / There man can work what God hath willed; / The joy of perfect work his prize.

P.S.S.T.  Sections 2 & 3 Read together Psalm 23/partial in citation B6. What are the blessings and provisions mentioned in this Psalm? Note how God is always with you, leading you, following you, surrounding you.

  • He leadeth me beside the still waters
  • He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
  • Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life

What were the blessings identified in the Scripture story in citations B7 and B8/2nd Kings 4:8-17 & 18-36 for both Elisha and the Shunammite woman, and her son as well?

Now ask and answer the questions posed in citation S12/Science & Health 206:19-21,25-28:
“Does God send sickness, giving the mother her child for the brief space of a few years and then taking it away by death? …

“Can there be any birth or death for man, the spiritual image and likeness of God? Instead of God sending sickness and death, He destroys them, and brings to light immortality.”

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – Ask students to memorize the passage in Science & Health 494:10-11, “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.”

Regardless of your need, rest assured God is right there with blessings abundant. Here is a hint of how to prepare thought to receive, be aware of, the blessing:

“Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, — neither in nor of matter, — and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well. Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love” (cit. S21/14:12-18).

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – One of the biggest blessings we have is the blessing of life itself. There is much to consider about your life.
Where did it originate, how is it maintained, how long will you have it? See a possible answer in citation S25/407:22:
“In Science, all being is eternal, spiritual, perfect, harmonious in every action. Let the perfect model be present in your thoughts instead of its demoralized opposite. This spiritualization of thought lets in the light, and brings the divine Mind, Life not death, into your consciousness.”

Read also together Psalm 119:18, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”

P.S.S.T.  Section 6 – The Scriptures point to Christ Jesus as a model, the way-shower, of how blessings support a life of service, of giving, of blessing others. Ask students to share examples of how Christ Jesus blessed others and how he received blessings as well.

Science and Health 495:16 (cit. S27) is a wonderful statement of Mary Baker Eddy’s guidance to us for living a blessed life.
“Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious — as Life eternally is — can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not. Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony.”

Read together Hymn 138 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words provided here):

Hymn 138

I praise Thee, Lord, for blessings sent / To break the dream of human power; / For now, my shallow cistern spent, / I find Thy font and thirst no more.

I take Thy hand and fears grow still; / Behold Thy face and doubts remove; / Who would not yield his wavering will / To perfect Truth and boundless Love?

That Truth gives promise of a dawn / Beneath whose light I am to see, / When all these blinding veils are drawn, / Thy love has always guided me.

Praise to God for blessings sent. We bow our heads in receptivity.
