Ken Cooper’s “POETIC POSTLUDE” shares poetry inspired by Bible citations, that THROUGH TRUE DISCIPLESHIP WE BECOME AS CHRIST, AT ONE WITH GOD, as in this week’s Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson on:
“DOCTRINE OF ATONEMENT”
For Sunday, October 15, 2023
Why is “Doctrine of Atonement” so important?
It establishes our source, not as a distant thing from the past, but as the constant stream of living water, bubbling forth with the vitality of perfect God and perfect man. These verses from James are so important to grasp:
James 3:11 Have you ever known a spring to give sweet and bitter water simultaneously? Gush forth with both clean and dirty water from the same opening?
James 3:12 Have you ever seen a fig-tree with a crop of olives, or seen figs growing on a vine? A spring simply cannot give fresh and salt water at the same time.
[Have you ever known 2+2=5….]
When we are clear that God, Life, Truth, Love, Soul, Mind, Principle, Spirit, is our source, what a wonderful continuance we have for every moment of our day. The essence, the Science of Christianity, is simply as stated by Jesus: “I and my Father are one” (Bible cit. B7/John 10:30). To be at one with all the synonyms of God is the kingdom of heaven within us. There is nothing else we can be or do!
As God is our source, He is our constant nourishment. There is nothing else that can interfere with or spoil this relationship. When we follow the example of Jesus, as his true disciples, (“I can of mine own self do nothing” John 5:30), we also recognize that God is the source of being. Hear the words of God at the baptism of Jesus: “Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”. (Matthew

GOLDEN TEXT
1 Timothy 4:6 If you lay out these instructions to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, fully nourished by the words of faith and of the good Christian doctrine which you have so closely followed.
RESPONSIVE READING.
2 Corinthians 5:20 We are now ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us to each of you, urging you to be fully reconciled to God alone, fully at peace with Him.
2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make every grace – every favour and blessing, overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work and cause, blessing others in the same way..
2 Corinthians 9:10 Now He who provides seed for the sower will both provide bread for our food and multiply your seed for sowing that you may increase the harvest of your righteousness, which shows itself in active goodness, kindness, and an outpouring of love.
2 Corinthians 9:11 Thus you will be enriched in all things and in every way, so that you can be ever generous, and this generosity born of God will bring forth constant thanksgiving and love to our God.
Atonement is the result of “faith, hope and love” as we studied in last week’s lesson. “We must prove our faith by demonstration” (SH cit. S20/329:12).
Jesus leads the way for us. At the transfiguration, Peter, James, and John heard these words: “Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. hear ye him.” (Matthew 17:5). Was this just said to Jesus? The Word is constant, universal, now.
How many times have you heard this question: “Can you hear that?” What is the response? – To be still, listen, search, reach for what is there….
TO FOLLOW CHRIST IS TO LISTEN AND THEN DO.
WHEN WE DEMONSTRATE OUR UNITY WITH LOVE, TRUTH, LIFE, SPIRIT, MIND, SOUL, PRINCIPLE, WE ARE SIMPLY REFLECTING WHAT WE ARE, BEING AT ONE WITH OUR SOURCE.
ATONEMENT IS BOTH THE LISTENING AND THE DOING.
